What is Positive Behaviour Support

At Green Seeds Behaviour Support, we recognise that all behaviour communicates a need or serves a purpose. When a person experiences behaviours of concern, it is often a sign that they are trying to express something important or cope with challenges in their environment.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that helps reduce behaviours of concern while improving a person’s quality of life. It is widely used to support both children and adults living with disability.

Rather than focusing only on stopping behaviour, PBS aims to understand the reasons behind the behaviour and provide practical strategies that support the person’s needs.

Our approach focuses on understanding each individual’s unique needs and developing personalised strategies that promote independence, wellbeing, and meaningful participation in everyday life. We work collaboratively with participants and their support networks, including families, carers, and support workers, to create practical strategies and supportive environments that help reduce behaviours of concern and build positive skills.

Key elements of Positive Behaviour Support include:

Assessment and understanding Behaviours

PBS begins by identifying the underlying reasons for behaviours of concern. These may include communication difficulties, sensory sensitivities, emotional distress, or unmet needs.

Person-Centred Planning

Every individual is unique. PBS focuses on the person’s strengths, preferences, and goals, and involves them in decision-making wherever possible.

Creating enabling environment

Changes to routines, environments, or communication supports can reduce stress and help individuals succeed in everyday situations.

Responsive Strategies

PBS also includes practical strategies to respond safely and effectively when behaviours of concern occur, ensuring the wellbeing of the individual and those around them.

Skill Development

PBS prioritises teaching new skills that provide positive alternatives to behaviours of concern. This may include communication skills, emotional regulation, and social skills.

Positive Reinforcement

Desired behaviours are encouraged through positive reinforcement, such as praise, meaningful rewards, or increased opportunities for preferred activities.

Collaboration

Effective behaviour support relies on collaboration between the participant, family members, support workers, educators, and other health professionals.

Long-Term Change

PBS is not a quick fix. It focuses on sustainable improvements through ongoing monitoring, reflection, and adjustment of strategies.

Behaviour Support Plan

A Behaviour Support Plan is a practical guide developed in collaboration with the participant and their support network, including family members, carers, educators, and support workers.

The plan outlines strategies to reduce behaviours of concern while supporting the person to develop new skills and improve overall wellbeing.

A behaviour support plan serves three main purposes:

  • Understanding the Behaviours

  • To provide clear and practical guidance for carers and support workers on how to respond to behaviours of concern safely and effectively.

  • To support the individual in developing skills and preventative strategies that reduce the need for these behaviours over time.
